Amateur Kiwi Sam Perry leaves competitors in the dust before winning the elite men’s in Queenstown’s own downhill mountain bike series.
A record 60 riders competed in the fourth race of the series at Queenstown Bike Park last Sunday, including Austrian World Cup racer Markus Pekoll.
Alanna Columb won the women’s race with Harriet Latchem close behind in second, while rider Ben Stenner won the sport men category. Next race is on February 10 at Wynyard Express downhill track.
Race organiser Jimmy Carling says: “Everyone thought Markus would have it so we were surprised when the times came in and Sam beat him by a couple of seconds.”
“The series is taking off,” Carling says. “The course featured some of the steepest and most technical trails on the hill so it provided a real challenge for all skill levels.”
