We’re winding up for our oar-some challenge

Wakatipu High rowers, from front Mike Foley, Alex Hall, Marco Dyson and Matt Nicholson with cox Gabby Buchanan, hope to paddle to Maadi Cup Regatta glory next week.

They’re part of a 12-strong squad competing against 1392 crews from 120 schools in the week-long New Zealand secondary school champs starting on Monday at Lake Karapiro near Hamilton.

It’s the first time local students, who train on Lake Hayes, have attended the North Island-hosted champs – and it’s costing $22,000 to get them there.

But the Wakatipu High crews are on a roll, collecting a haul of medals at the recent South Island Secondary Schools, while Kate Gilbert and Olivia Robins also nabbed silver in the women’s novice double scull at the NZ National Rowing Championships last month.
