Ten Queenstown women will pit their futsal skills against international competition at the Pan Pacific Masters Games this weekend.
The women, aged 30 to 50-plus, are members of the Wakatipu Futsal Club and have combined players from two local teams to form the competition squad.
They’ll play six games in two days at the Masters Games on the Gold Coast and could be formidable – having won silver and bronze medals at the National Futsal Championships earlier this year.
Player Bindy Crayford says while the team hopes to be competitive, it’ll also be a social trip.
“Our team manager Haylee Roberts wanted to celebrate her 40th birthday by going,” Crayford says.
“But we’d like to think we’ll be competitive. We’ve been training twice a week and playing games in our local futsal league.”
The women, coached by Queenstown Football Club’s Phil Markham and Damien Hochberg, have raised more than $10,000 in sponsorship from local businesses during the year for their trip.
