It was a double whammy for Wakatipu novice quad members (from left) Mike Hurcus, Don Heald, Cam Williams and Mike Foley at last Sunday’s Lake Hayes rowing regatta.
The boys scooped one of nine Wakatipu Rowing Club wins from 28 races – and also helped their club win overall on points against eight other clubs from Invercargill, Dunedin, Wanaka and Oamaru.
The Wakatipu’s 40-odd rowers raced against a total of 60 rivals in three categories – masters, opens and juniors – in front of 300 spectators at the annual end-of-season event.
Club captain Nick Bailey, who departs for Sydney in three weeks’ time to work, says the win on home water tops off his 18-month stay in Queenstown.
“Over this year the club’s just transformed hugely,” Bailey adds.
“[The regatta] was a huge team effort and hopefully the success will continue.”
