Waka rugby on the small screen

'Awesome opportunity': Captain Angus Herron and coach Jim Gilbert are excited about Saturday's game against Dunstan being televised live

In a huge honour for Wakatipu High’s 1st XV rugby team, Saturday’s home match against Alexandra’s Dunstan High 1st XV will be televised live on Sky Sport 1.

The team’s been playing for the first time in the Otago premier schools tournament, and despite sitting 10th out of 12 teams with only one win and a draw to show for itself, coach Jim Gilbert says the boys have come a long way, especially as 25 of the 29-strong squad are in Year 12.

“There’s a huge amount of character and courage in the group … No team from this school has ever played Otago Boys’ or Southland Boys’ 1st XVs, so these boys are sort of pioneering, and they can be really proud of that.”

Captain Angus Herron, 18, says having Saturday’s game beamed live across the country’s an “awesome opportunity”.

“If that can’t gee the boys up, I don’t know what will.”

Saturday’s game kicks off 12.40pm on the school’s rugby ground.
