Alexandra’s Alana Kairaoi and Invercargill’s Mitchell Kempton are pictured after winning the women’s and men’s titles at the annual Queenstown Squash Open recently.

In a sold-out field of 82, Kairaoi, ranked 20th amongst New Zealand’s female players, was among five A grade females and Kempton, who’s nationally-ranked 23rd, was among seven A grade men.

Each won $500 cash donated by Queenstown’s RBJ Builders, while Smith & Sons provided a random $500 cash prize in the lower divisions.

The top local players were Dave Gardiner, who was sixth in the men’s, and Tracey Flux, who placed fifth in the women’s.

The field included 15 Otago Uni players, while others hailed from Southland, Canterbury, Wellington and Northland.

Numbers were limited as the club has only two courts, beside the Memorial Centre.

Club president Dan Batchelor says discussions are ongoing with council around a possible move to the Events Centre in light of the proposed town centre bypass redevelopment.
