Tim’s French connection

Queenstown ski racer Tim Cafe negotiates the tough slalom course at the world alpine champs at Val d’Isere, France, last week.

The 21-year-old – who jetted back into Queenstown this week for a brief visit and to re-enrol at Otago University in Dunedin – was the only Kiwi to qualify for the main event, but like 56 of the 75 starters he was disqualified after missing a gate. Cafe also qualified 54th seed for the giant slalom last week, finishing 46th, and the week before was 36th in the Super-G from start No 50.

His dad Wayne says Tim “achieved his goal of competing in all three disciplines”. The experience gained would help him in his build-up to the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, he adds.
