The barefoot run brigade


Curious or converted, those intrigued by barefoot running can now learn more in Queenstown. 

The style of running has been around for thousands of years, but has only recently become more popular. 

Queenstown’s Studio Pilates and Physiotherapy is tapping into that, offering inquisitive runners the chance to learn more during a four-week course starting next Tuesday. 

It’s all for a good cause – proceeds will go to the Steel Pilates Trust set up as a rehab programme for men recovering from cancer treatment. 

“There’s been an explosion in the barefoot running scene throughout the world,” the Studio’s principal physio Louise Parker says. 

“But these sessions are not all about going out for a run.” 

The focus will be on the biomechanics of barefoot running, tips on how to look after and strengthen your feet as well as the Wakatipu’s best trails. 

Separately ‘Run Like a Girl’ classes begin next Wednesday catering to women keen to iron out kinks in their running style. 

It runs for four weeks with proceeds donated to the Pink Pilates Trust – a trust set up for Australian and New Zealand women suffering from cancer.
