Teenager flies high

Queenstown Rovers striker Sahara McDonald gets airborne in fending off Southend United’s Michelle McIntosh during the local team’s 3-1 semi-final win in the Southland women’s soccer knockout tournament at the Events Centre last Saturday – the fleet-footed 14-year-old slotted both second-half goals against her Invercargill opponents.

Only formed this year, the giant-killing Rovers travel to Invercargill for Sunday’s final against a Riverton side stacked with Southland reps – but Rovers coach Darren Rewi is “pretty confident” they’ll win.

The team’s been bolstered by several new recruits, including McDonald, since a plea for more players featured recently in Mountain Scene.
