Queenstown snowboard cross teen Duncan Campbell is the second-fastest junior in the world.
Campbell, 19, took silver in slushy conditions at the 20th Junior World Championships SBX in Rolga, Slovenia, last Tuesday.
He went close in a thrilling final but was pipped to gold by Austrian 19-year-old Luca Haemmerle.
“Luca ran a really smart race,” Campbell says.
“We all got tangled up on the first corner and it was a patience game to stay on your feet. I tried on three or four occasions to get past but kept getting pinched.”
Campbell says he’s happy with the result at the end of a long northern hemisphere season.
“Obviously it could have been that tiny bit better but after the entire day’s racing I’m more than stoked with how it ended up.”
Seventy-four snowboarders competed in the event.
Campbell arrives back in Queenstown today via Colorado.
He’ll start training for the pre-Olympic season, which will be the biggest of his career.
“I’m really looking forward to all the things I want to achieve during my off-season but also just chilling in the mountains - hiking, camping or split boarding.”
