Arrowtown’s World Cup soccer star Tane Gent hopes to be part of the action again early tomorrow morning.
Gent (16) and his Young All Whites team take on hosts Nigeria in Lagos in the next round of the under-17 World Cup.
They made soccer history earlier this week, becoming the first New Zealand side to make the final 16 of a World Cup competition.
Mum Sam Gent says her son is overwhelmed by the way the Cup sides are looked after – the Young All Whites have a full-time security squad and are ferried around by helicopter.
Tane played in their first match against Costa Rica and was on the bench for last Sunday’s draw against Turkey – but Sam says he hopes to be amongst the action again tomorrow.
With Nigeria having already knocked out big-name Brazil, she says: “I think it’s going to be a fairly intense game.”
The match is live on Sky from 7am.
