Arrowtown School rugby kids mobbed a VIP guest who showed up for a surprise lunchtime training session.
The youngsters had no idea the All Blacks’ first-five Dan Carter would be joining them in the playground last Friday.
Carter’s hush-hush visit was hatched by school parent Andy Brinsley. The Kawarau Jet co-owner put the proposal to the star when picking him up at the airport the day before, when he arrived as special guest for his company’s 50th birthday celebration. Carter took part in school team training for a Rippa rugby tournament, watched by a crowd of other excited youngsters.
“You could hear the bush telegraph going across the playground,” Brinsley says.
Carter also signed autographs and posed for photos before the end-of-lunch-break bell rang.
Brinsley: “I couldn’t believe how [the kids] all turned round and went back to class.
“When I drove away with Dan, he said if the kids just did this or that they’d be able to score a try.”
