Sun-drenched Queenstown is seven’s rugby heaven for our Richie

The man who brought the National Rugby Sevens tournament to Queenstown couldn’t have been happier today(Saturday).

Arrowtown’s Richie Anderson, the operations manager this year, was beaming at the end of a sun-drenched day which attracted a 4100-strong crowd to Queenstown’s downtown Recreation Ground.

“What a difference a year makes,” Anderson chirruped to Mountain Scene, in reference to last year’s dismal weather.

“We were happy last year but we’re much happier this year because the crowd is happy.”

The crowd certainly was by the end of play at 7pm – including the fully-nude male streaker who managed to sprint from one side of the field to the other during the final match and exit the ground, evading security who were in hot pursuit.

Otago went down in the final round robin match to last year’s winner Waikato 22-17.

Anderson was instrumental in bringing the event to Queenstown after first running it down here in 2004.

Games kick off tomorrow (Sunday) from 10.05am. The final is scheduled for 5.15pm.
