Southern Stampede’s Quinn Drake hits West Auckland Admirals’ Yin Man Chan during ice hockey action in Queenstown last Sunday.
Quinn was sent to the penalty box but his team still won 9-8.
The night before, the Queenstown-based Stampede beat the Admirals 9-4 and have now won three of their first four games.
Stampede defender Bert Haines says crowd support was crucial: “We’ve got the best fans in the league, hands down.
“All three lines are contributing and our young guys are stepping out.”
Haines singles out 16-year-old Max Macharg, who scored his first national league goal, for praise.
This weekend the Stampede play a double-header in Christchurch against Canterbury Red Devils.
“They’re strong but I think we’re going to go up there and surprise them,” Haines says.
“Everybody kind of feels we’re a bit of an underdog.”
Stampede sit second in the five-team league to Botany Swarm, with two games in hand.
