Squash stalwart is a lifer

The Queens-town Squash Club has honoured one of its stalwarts with a life membership.

At its annual prizegiving last Friday night, the club made the surprise presentation to founding committee member Alan Brown.

Brown was involved at the club’s inception back in 1977.

Fellow longstanding club member Bruce Morris recalls the club started largely because of Brown.

“Alan was one of the committee members who stepped up to the mark and got it going.”

Brown recalled once running a fundraising raffle with 2000 tickets and having a hard time selling them in hotels.

“I suggested we get the 2000 and put them in a plastic bag, dress as Santa Claus and go around the pubs – we sold them just like that.”

As for the game itself, he still enjoys it.

“Over the years it’s been great. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it and it keeps the weight down.”
