Sports hub takes shape

A community sports ‘hub’ for the Whakatipu is forging itself into existence, with its first five board members recently appointed.

Queenstown Cricket Club member Matt Hollyer, who’s been working with representatives of 10 sports clubs in the area to set up the hub, says a public notice in July calling for applicants for board members attracted a strong response.

Joining him on the board are local sports stalwarts Matt Leach, Laura Nathan, Amy Kirk and Marty James.

The group will have its first annual meeting on October 20, at which two more members will be voted on.

To that end, Hollyer’s asking for more people to put themselves for ward for election, ‘‘to make a difference to sport and recreation activity in this community’’.

The hub, for which he’s applied for incorporated society status, is aimed at encouraging participation and boosting the work of volunteers.

Hollyer told Mountain Scene in July that once it’s up and running, the hub could seek funding and potentially recruit a community sports facilitator-type role of the kind that exists in
other parts of the country.
