A part-time Queenstowner is funding New Zealand’s entry in the world’s leading off-road motorcycle race.
The Wellard Club Team – to be launched at Queenstown Motorcycles tomorrow – is backed by Western Australia-based Mauro Balzarini, along with Yamaha NZ.
Balzarini – whose Wellard Group Holdings Pty is Australia’s largest livestock exporter – is a former professional enduro rider.
Since 2007 he’s sponsored Western Australian teams to the International Six Day Enduro, which he formerly competed in himself.
This year’s NZ team to compete in Mexico from November 1-6 comprise three North Island elite riders.
They are former national enduro champion Rory Mead, current under-200cc enduro champion Adrian Smith, who’s successfully competed at three ISDEs, and two-time cross-country champ Adam Reeves.
Balzarini will ship the team’s bikes and spares over to Mexico in one of his sea containers.
