Snowboarding’s Burton Open kicks off at Cardrona near Queenstown

Tricks will flow on Cardrona’s slopestyle course today as snowboarders battle for a Burton NZ Open semi-finals spot. 

Riders from 19 countries are registered for the packed event, which kicks off with qualifying rounds today and wraps up with finals on Saturday. 

There are ten men’s and five women’s spots up for grabs in the slopestyle semi-finals and finals on Friday, when top Kiwi rider Shelly Gotlieb will showcase her skills. 

Contenders made the most of the stellar conditions at a training day yesterday, testing the slopestyle run and halfpipe.
