Arrowtown has snuck into the Mountain Scene Twenty/20 cricket league’s final four with a last-over victory against Central Queenstown’s Pelicans.
It should never have been that close. Arrowtown were coasting at 100 for three, chasing the Pelicans’ 121.
However, four wickets in quick succession saw Arrowtown needing four from the final over.
Up stepped Pelican Hayden Finch. He bowled two batsmen out with his first two deliveries, his next was a dot ball and his fourth earned him another scalp with an lbw shout. Arrowtown’s Aidan Winter managed to get a streaky French cut to the boundary for a nail-biting win.
League organiser Ian Paterson says: “Arrowtown were cruising to victory but they did their level best to blow the match.”
The win left Arrowtown tied on the points table with Kelvin Heights, but Arrowtown go through to the semis on a countback.
Joining them are top qualifier Fernhill/Sunshine Bay which knocked over Kelvin Heights, the second-placed Pelicans and Frankton despite its upset loss to Wakatipu last weekend.
Arrowtown’s victory over the Pelicans team – which has never beaten Arrowtown – also earned it the Ian Paterson Challenge, now locked away till next season.
