Queenstown’s athletics club’s expanding its horizons in a bid to make it easier for local youngsters to take up sport.
The Remarkables Runners, recently rebranded as Queenstown Athletic, now runs training sessions in Arrowtown once a week, as well as its usual junior and senior sessions at the Queenstown Events Centre.
The club started up again for the season last week, with senior athletes eyeing the NZ Secondary School Track and Field & Road Championships in December.
Club vice-president Tina Mongston is excited by the expansion.
“Arrowtown’s always had a huge sporting cohort from Arrowtown Primary School.
“But in the last couple of years it’s dropped off a bit.”
She says increased congestion on the roads was a hassle for families living at places like Lake Hayes Estate and Shotover Country, so the club was trialling trainings in Arrowtown to make things easier.
Club president Neville Britton says the club’s current status is “pretty positive”.
“It’s amazing how it’s grown.”
Training’s held at the Queenstown Events Centre for seniors at 5pm on Tuesdays and for juniors at 4.30pm on Thursdays, with Arrowtown training held at the primary school at 4.30pm on Fridays.
