Wakatipu High coxed quad crew (pictured from left) Ruby Field (coxswain), Sarah Foley, Veronica Rotman, Clementine Maxwell and Ariana Horsley featured in a surprise resurgence by local rowers at the season’s first major Otago-Southland regatta in Clyde last weekend.
The high school crew dominated to win the women’s novice 2000-metre event by three boat lengths. They were just one of the high school crews who finished in the top three positions at least six times.
Not to be outdone, the club’s masters also displayed winning performances with club president Hans Arnestedt winning the B final of the 2000m single scull event.
Club president Nick Bailey stole the same title from a couple of longstanding champions in the A final with a strong finishing burst in the last 100m.
Bailey says last weekend was a huge improvement: “Last year we went to the same regatta and turned up on the Saturday to qualify but we didn’t get anybody into the finals – whereas this year we killed it. It’s a real turnaround.”
The club, now looking ahead to its next big meet in Twizel in January, will celebrate the extension of its Lake Hayes boatshed on Sunday with an official opening by patron Jim Boult, followed by the naming of four new boats.
