Southern Stampede assistant skipper Bert Haines expects plenty of aggro against rivals Canterbury Red Devils at home this weekend.
The Devils just pipped the Queenstown-based side 5-4 in the national league final in Christchurch last year.
Adding spice to the Winter Festival double-header at Queenstown’s Ice Arena is Gore-born Ice Black and hardman Hayden Argyle. He played the past three seasons for Stampede, but is back with the Devils.
“He’s one of the best in the league at body-checking,” Haines says. “I think you’ll see a bit of biffo.”
“We play much better at home and feed off the energy of the crowd,” Haines says.
The puck drops at 7pm on Saturday for the first Stampede-Devils game, then at 4.15pm on Sunday for the second.
