PRO French rider Remy Absalon says Queenstown has a growing reputation in Europe as a winter training destination.
Absalon – who won the iconic Megavalanche in 2012 in the French Alps and rides for Commencal Bikes Enduro Super Team – is in town for Queenstown Bike Festival.
“In France, it snows from January to March so it’s not easy to train. Everyone knows Queenstown is far away but the tracks and weather are very good, so it’s becoming a good place to train.”
Absalon will compete in Friday’s Rock n’ Roll Enduro at Coronet Peak and Sunday’s Mega Avalanche – a 1650m mass-start descent down the Remarkables. The new local event is based on the French race.
“You have to be complete because it’s very physical and technical too. A good start is also very important too.
“The season starts in May so it’s more for training but it’s a race so if I can win it will be nice.”
