Resort teen makes history

A 15-year-old Queenstowner has become the youngest winner of a New Zealand disc golf tour event.

Ben Wiel-Lake beat 21 other players, including many of NZ’s top players, to win the recent second annual
Rush tournament at Queenstown’s Tucker Beach course.

It’s thought the Year 11 Wakatipu High student is also the first teenager to win a tour event.

Ben took out the second and third 18-hole rounds then held out local champion Hemi Te Awhitu by one stroke to win the final Super Six round.

“This is a record that will stand for a long time to come,” Te Awhitu says.

Meanwhile, the Tucker Beach course will stage a matchplay event in December, involving the top 16 players in the country, after this year’s 15 tour events.
