The driving force behind Arrowtown’s Millbrook Resort was recognised during the recent New Zealand Open prizegiving at the golf course’s 18th hole.
The winning amateur in the pro-am was presented with a replica of a trophy created to honour Eiichi Ishii, of Japan, who died last year – a tradition that will carry on in future tournaments.
The original – of a graceful bird in flight – was created by sculptor Chris Charteris, who sourced the pounamu, or greenstone, from South Westland’s Big Bay, and is being held at Millbrook on display.
The bird’s said to reflect the air of respect and interaction the NZ Open team had with Ishii.
