No snow might spell bad news for Queenstown skifields, but it has got Motatapu entries flying out the door.
Organisers of the annual sporting event believe spring conditions contributed to record sign-ups when entries opened for the March 2012 challenge last Friday, since people are still focusing on outdoor activities away from the slopes.
“The spring weather here in Queenstown has certainly been keeping everybody on their bikes…people’s minds are focused on continuing with their biking and running fitness through the winter,” event director Gemma Boyle says.
Motatapu events – which cross the stunning high country Motatapu Station – include an off-road mountain bike race, marathon, 49km team run, 15km run and a triathlon.
“Entries have been strong across all of the five events,” she adds.
