Queenstown Rovers have won the Southland title.
The young football team beat Invercargill’s Old Boys 3-1 at the resort’s Events Centre pitches on Saturday afternoon.
A shock loss second-placed Queens Park against Southend United in Invercargill meant Rovers’ victory secured the Southland Premier Men’s Championship for 2015 – titled the Donald Gray Cup.
Rovers coach Jamie Whitmarsh said: “It was really rewarding for the boys.
“On the pitch the celebrations were a little muted – the team we beat were last year’s champions and you never like to rub it in anyone’s face.
“But once we were back in the changing rooms we let loose a little bit.”
Goal machines Andrew Mobberley, Alan O’Sullivan and Rene Gonzalez fittingly scored one each in Saturday’s win.
They’ve propelled Rovers to the title with 12, 11 and 6 goals respectively this season.
But Whitmarsh says the rest of the team deserves equal plaudits, especially the young locals who have “stepped up”.
