Queenstown-led Ice Blacks take bronze

Queenstown-based Ice Blacks captain Bert Haines led his team to bronze at the division two group B World Championships in Spain.

Canadian-born Haines was one of three Queenstowners representing the country in games against Turkey (6-3 win), Mexico (0-5 loss), South Africa (4-2 win), China (3-2 win) and Spain (2-6 loss) in the International Ice Hockey Federation tournament held in Jaca from April 5-11.

Haines, Mitchell Frear and Callum Burns all played five games and scored a goal apiece.

Ice Blacks were aiming for gold but lost the last match against gold-medallists Spain. Mexico took silver.

Both Haines and Burns play for Queenstown’s ice hockey team Southern Stampede, while former Stampede player Frear’s playing for Dunedin Thunder while at university.
