Phew – green light for Queenstown Twenty/20 cricket match

Queenstown Events Centre’s first provincial Twenty/20 game today is going ahead despite fears it would be canned due to rain.

Days of heavy downpour created doubt the HRV Cup challenge between Otago Volts and Wellington Firebirds would happen, but cricket fans can rest easy – the teams, including Firebirds’ star Aussie import Brett Lee, will take to the field at 2pm as planned.

Local teams won’t be testing the pitch, though – the 10am curtainraiser between a Queenstown club side and the new Slope Hill team has been cancelled.

Lakes Leisure turf manager Peter Domigan says he looked under the pitch covers last night after the deluge stopped and it’s “looking good” but they had to “pull the pin” on the opening game.

“It got cancelled because we’ve got too much work to do to the ground this morning, so we needed that time to finish the ground off,” Domigan says.
