International riders such as Danny Hart (right) dominated the South Island Downhill Cup at Coronet Peak last weekend.

The 17-year-old elite rider from the United Kingdom fought off tough competition to narrowly beat France’s Fabien Pedemanaud and Scotland’s Ben Cathro with a time of 3hr 1min 57sec.

Queenstown men and women missed out breaking into the top five placings on their home track.

Alexandra’s Matt Scoles placed fifth in the elite men’s event with his time of 3:02.48sec.

Harriet Ruecknagel, of Germany, flew home a few minutes ahead of second-placed woman Harriet Harper, of Blenheim, in a time of 3:33.02sec. Canada’s Katrina Strand was third.

The race, which attracted competitors from around New Zealand and the world, was the second in a three-race series at different courses around the South Island. The final round is in Blenheim this weekend.
