Queenstown’s Southern Lakes Swimming Club broke the record for its biggest open day last Saturday.

Celebrating its fifth open day, about 50 swimmers plunged into Lake Whakatipu, with locals boosted by visitors from Nelson, Te Anau, Wānaka and Cromwell.

Meanwhile, club president Sheena Ashford-Tait’s keen to enlist 180 swimmers for the club’s inaugural 18-hour open water charity swim on December 18, in aid of mental health
charity I Am Hope.

‘‘We think only our members can swim in the dark — it’s 4am till 10pm — but anyone from the community can join in the daylight.’’

Swimmers can swim any distance they like from the club’s Coastguard HQ.
