Not playing nice on the ice

Southern Stampede forward Braden Lee cops a hit by Canterbury Red Devils defender Mitchell Oak (left) during a national ice hockey league game at the Queenstown Ice Arena last Sunday.

The Stampede lost the game 3-2. A day earlier they lost 5-0 to the defending champions, conceding four goals in the last 10 minutes.

Stampede’s Sunday efforts weren’t helped by an administrative blunder, according to key defender Bert Haines.

Haines alleges officials wrongly banned him from that game after he’d been sinbinned for fighting on the ice on Saturday. They allowed him back on the ice for the second period after realising their mistake, but by then the Stampede were 2-0 down, he says.

Tomorrow and Saturday the Stampede play a home doubleheader against West Auckland Admirals, who include three Finnish imports. The puck drops both days at 7pm.
