Not all plain sailing

Dunedin entry El Capone was among 47 yachts that failed to complete the 30th annual Donald Hay Classic regatta from Kingston to Queenstown last Saturday after the wind died off Jack’s Point.

Only eight craft finished the course out of 55 taking part.

First on corrected time was Reprieve, from Dunedin, skippered by Richard Hawkins which won the Donald Hay Trophy, followed by Jeff Mercer’s Rattle & Hum, from the Otago Yacht Club, and Freak Brothers, skippered by

Bill Fratter of Timaru.

The only local to finish was Clive Manners-Wood, who was fifth on handicap in his new Elliott 7, Firefly. Manners-Wood won the inaugural race in 1979.

The event also marked 150 years since pioneer Donald Hay voyaged from Kingston to Queenstown on a rudimentary raft.

“I reckon Donald Hay was looking down and just playing with us,” says Wakatipu Yacht Club organiser Andrew Husheer.
