The new composite Mount Aspiring College 1st XV endured a baptism of fire in the Highlanders schoolboys’ competition last Saturday.

The team was beaten 99-0 by defending champions Otago Boys’ High, whose Queenstown halfback Matt Ellis scored two tries.

“To be honest, the boys stuck in there and it’s only going to get easier,” Mount Aspiring coach Hamish Crosbie says.

His team included Wakatipu High players Cam McKerchar at halfback and winger Brooklyn Niwa.

The team travels to Oamaru this Saturday to play St Kevin’s College.
