Queenstown Golf Club boss Michael Shattock and TV producer Peter Thornton relax in the club’s newly upgraded bar.

Thornton last Friday filmed at the Kelvin Heights course for the Sky and TV3 show The Golf Club, hosted by veteran broadcaster Phillip Leishman.

Shattock says his club’s spent more than $50,000 on matching “the world-class golf course with world-class off-course facilities”.

Renaming the facility the Peninsula Coffee Bar, the club’s also trying to entice custom from nearby residents by selling social memberships at $10 a year.

Local interior designer Eileen Law says the refurnished and redecorated bar previously resembled an old canteen: “We’ve brought it from the 70s, 80s into the 21st century.”

Queenstown Golf Club, which also administers the Frankton course, has returned to running catering facilities and pro shops in-house.
