Arrowtown whizzkid Anna Leat will compete for New Zealand at the Commonwealth Karate Championships in Australia next month.
The talented nine-year-old has been selected for a large Kiwi squad to do battle at Sydney’s Whitlam Leisure Centre on July 30-31.
Other countries confirmed for the prestige tournament are South Africa, Canada, Scotland, Australia, Cameroon, India and Botswana.
Anna will fight in the age 10 and 11 categories.
“It’s great news and Anna is one of only two people from south of Christchurch to make the squad,” mum Jackie Leat says.
“Before Sydney, we’ll have a very busy calendar of fundraising, training and lead-up tournaments.”
Anna – who has been receiving welcome support from the local Bruce Grant Youth Trust – made the cut for the Commonwealth champs after grabbing silver and bronze in her age group at the Karate NZ Open in Christchurch last month.
