Maniototo relied on its forward strength to grind out a Central Otago premier rugby win over Wakatipu in the Queenstown mud on Saturday.
The heavy ground conditions at Queenstown Recreation Ground played into the hands of the visitors and allowed its experienced forward pack to control the run of play in the 19-15 win.
Tim O’Neill and Charles Crutchley had strong games up front for the Maggots. No 8 Ben Craw scored the visitors’ only try while Quintin Smith had an excellent day converting the try and adding four penalties.
For Wakatipu, Kapa Moeke and Chris Young scored tries while Young added a conversion and a penalty.
The loose forward trio of Tom Ria, Pat James and Raf Tahura had standout games for the hosts.
In other results, home side Clyde Earnscleugh scored 16 unanswered tries to rout Roxburgh 107-0 – with Tom Docherty scoring 47 points through four tries, 12 conversions and a penalty – Cromwell won 39-18 over a spirited Alexandra side at Molyneux Park, and Matakanui Combined beat Upper Clutha 23-14 at Omakau Domain.
