Christchurch multisport athlete Adam Milne produced the third-fastest time to win Queenstown’s Peak to Peak race on Saturday.

Milne completed the popular 44km ski, run, bike and kayak from The Remarkables to Coronet Peak in 2hr 09min 31sec, with a 10 minute-plus lead ahead of second-place Gavin Mason and Flavio Vianna, who finished third.

It’s Milne’s second Peak to Peak title, after previously winning the event in 2010.

Meanwhile Queenstown team Fergburger was pipped by Oamaru’s Where’sGavin? crew in a closely-fought race in the teams category, with a time of 2:02.7sec. Local crew Outside Sports came in at third place.

Wanaka’s Joanna Williams reclaimed the title she won in 2009, blitzing more than eight minutes off her previous best time to finish with 2:34.35sec. Second place Ailsa Rollinson, also from Wanaka finished second in 2:39.38sec. Kate Colbran (Christchurch) took third.

The field attracted 51 individuals, slightly down on the 56 from 2011, but 91 teams started ¬– an eight per cent increase on 2011, organiser Geoff Hunt says.

Twelve school teams also entered from around the region which is “a fantastic sign for the future of multisport”, Hunt adds.

“It was great to see the young athletes out there recording some excellent times. There are some names there that I am sure we’ll hear a lot more about.”
