Shooting a hole-in-one is a top return to golf for a Queenstown man getting over a bad back.
Pog Mahones duty manager Garry McGovern, 32, nailed Wanaka Golf Course’s par three sixth hole during the pub’s Christmas do on Sunday.
“It pitched short but rolled about 10 feet and went in. It was awesome – we were jumping around like bloody idiots,” McGovern says.
McGovern, who started playing aged eight or nine and now has a handicap of 13, says it’s his first ace – he hit it using a nine iron.
It didn’t help him win on the day – he shot 15 over.
It’s a sweet return to the sport for McGovern who says he took the previous year off from playing because of a bad back.
Workmate Sean McSparron, golfing with a group in front, says he heard the roar when McGovern pulled it off.
“He went pale as a ghost then started giving man hugs to everyone. It was a man-hug moment.”
