Making trails

Hard-working trail builders at Queenstown Mountain Bike Club have almost completed their latest masterpiece.

Rude Rock trail at Coronet Peak still needs some work before being fully bedded in. The exposed grade four trail will be officially opened later this month.

Club president Tom Hey says: “It took three guys 13 weeks to build but was about a year in the planning. So many people and organisations have helped this happen – from NZSki and Department of Conservation for allowing us to use the land to Lakes Environmental for the resource consent, and [surveyor firms] for helping with that.

“Hirequip even gave us a great deal on a digger over the holidays and Queenstown Trails Trust gave us funding.”

The 3km trail runs from above the Greengates chairlift. “It rides really well. We’ve had awesome feedback,” Hey says.

The club is also trialling an adopt-a-trail scheme, with R & R Sports offering manpower to maintain new Moke Lake track Gold Digger.

The scheme could be extended to existing and planned trails if successful.
