Ex-pro downhill rider Paul Angus (pictured) spends most of his lunch breaks hitting Hammy’s Track.
Rather than the gruelling uphill climb to Bob’s Peak trails, Angus has been making the most of gondola access – opened to riders by Skyline Enterprises late last month.
“That’s where I’ve seen the benefit the most – I just sneak up there for a few laps and get a lunchtime fix. It’s been brilliant,” he says.
A Queenstowner for six years, Angus, 30, has been mostly riding Hammy’s, the new 6km-long perimeter track.
“I absolutely love it,” he says.
Angus is one of about 190 season pass holders of Skyline’s four-month trial bike season. Season holders make up about half the riders, while the rest have half-day, day or short-term passes, says mountain bike project coordinator Brad Rowe.
Skyline boss Jeff Staniland adds: “It really seems to have captured people’s attention – it’s still a trial but so far, so good.”
