The annual invasion of Wakatipu slopes by top internationals in training mode has begun.
Among them is Canada’s top alpine skier Robbie Dixon (above), ripping down Coronet Peak yesterday to win the Southern Lakes Cup.
Dixon’s Canadian team-mates Tyler Nella took second and Ryan Semple came third in the Giant Slalom race. Kiwi Ben Griffin was fourth while Queenstowner Tim Café skied above his world ranking to finish eighth in a 49-strong field.
New Zealand men’s ski team coach Nils Coberger says the Canadians wanted a race and the number of internationals in town made for a strong field.
“It’s good having a bit of a yardstick.”
