International cricket fest coming to Queenstown

Queenstown is to host an international cricket festival for players over 35 in the hope of it becoming an annual fixture locally.

The Millbrook and Queenstown Cricket Clubs are jointly organising the Remarkable Cricket Festival from March 15-21 next year.

Twelve teams will play three 40-over games at the Events Centre in Frankton, Jack’s Point and the Millbrook Corner ground by Arrowtown.

Organising committee member Ian Paterson expects teams from overseas as well as New Zealand to sign up.

The Millbrook club hosts a Pan Pacific tournament, including teams from Hawaii, Canada and Australia, in the lead-up week.

The Hawaiian team are staying on for the festival.

“We want it to become an iconic event that will be held around the same time every year,” Paterson says.

“We want to keep it within the Wakatipu just for ease of everything.”

Paterson expects many of the players to bring partners and families.

Paterson says the event’s main appeal is for recreational cricket players.

“Guys who have probably been playing for most of their lives but got to the stage where cricket’s too physical and it’s more of a social thing to keep involved with friends and mates.”

Any proceeds will go towards local youth cricket and developing cricketing infrastructure.
