Otago Country’s Jai Baxter (right), from Clyde, eludes Wellington opponent, All Black Piri Weepu, on his way to scoring a try for the home team during their 29-14 loss at the National Rugby Sevens in Queenstown last Saturday.

On the same day Otago Country, including four Arrowtown players – brothers Aidan and Reece Winter, cousin Brett Winter and Daniel Iosefo – also lost to Auckland and Canterbury.

A fifth local for the Otago Country side, Damian Petre, couldn’t play due to injury. However on Sunday, Otago Country rallied to upset Northland 28-14 but finished by losing the bowl semi-final to Horowhenua-Kapiti 27-10.

About 9000 people attended the event – the sixth Sevens held at Queenstown’s Recreation Ground – over two sun-soaked days. North Harbour won the grand title, beating Counties-Manukau 29-26.
