Hot-shot riders drop in

A crowd of about 600 people drank the bar dry as they watched top riders throw down at Wynyard Jump Jam.

Atlas bar’s Season of Shred fundraising bash for Queenstown Mountain Bike Club proved a huge draw for riders and revellers.

The Steamer Wharf bar took 10 kegs of beer up to Fernhill’s Wynyard Jump Park but had to order in three more.

Vertigo Bikes’ Paul Angus, a judge for the ‘huckathon’ sponsored by his shop, says: “It was superb - electric. Good crowd and pretty epic riding.”

Club committee member Pete McInally says there were spills but more injuries came from the band’s moshpit.

Red Bull Rampage riders Kelly McGarry and Conor Macfarlane, and the likes of Ed Masters, were among dozens of riders hitting the jumps.

Macfarlane and Elmo Cotter shared the award for best overall style, Jarrah Healey won best whip, and McGarry best ‘goon’ style, messing about on the bike.

The fundraising total hasn’t yet been calculated but is expected to exceed $12,000.
