Honours even in ice hockey friendlies

Queenstown ice hockey team Southern Stampede shared the honours with the national side in the weekend’s double-header.

Stampede played the New Zealand Ice Blacks twice at Queenstown Ice Arena.

Friday’s game saw the Ice Blacks win 5-3 with two goals from former Stampede player Brett Speirs – who now plays for rivals Canterbury Red Devils.

But the Queenstowners, captained by Simon Glass, hit form in Saturday’s match – scoring seven goals to win 7-5.

Both friendly games drew large crowds despite only bragging rights at stake.
