Getting down and dirty for cyclocross

Queenstown’s Mike Kelly (pictured) gets down and dirty for the wacky New Zealand Cyclocross Championships last Saturday.

Kelly finished 22nd in the champs, held as part of the Winter Festival programme at a super-muddy Jardine Park course at Queenstown’s Kelvin Heights.

Two Wellingtonians took out the top spots in the men’s section – Dan Warren was first home followed by Alex Revell. Mark Leishman claimed third.

The women’s section was won by Ania McDonald, of Dunedin, while Queenstown’s Melissa Newell was second. Camelia Nicolau took third – and Queenstown’s former world junior mountain bike champ Scarlett Hagen rode home in fourth.

It’s the third time the annual event has been put on – and the first time it’s been held in Queenstown.
