Games go off piste at night

A star-studded comedy night and a three-day movie extravaganza have been added to the downtown bill for this year’s Winter Games.

The Comedy Roadshow rolls into the Memorial Hall on August 18 – followed by an adventure film festival which starts at the same venue the next day.

The roadshow, hosted by Kiwi funnyman Brendhan Lovegrove, features stand-up favourites like Gish and Simon McKinney, plus top Aussie comics Justin Hamilton and Greg Fleet.

The film fest is for all ages, with a series of movie shorts being bracketed into separate sessions with themes such as the environment, action and skiing/snowboarding.

Festival events boss Malcolm Blakeley says each of the movie nights will be about two and a half hours long and have a series of different films put together.

“The idea is to have lots of things happening in town during the Games for people who perhaps don’t want to be up the hill watching the live sports.

“We’re really pleased to have secured such a good comedy line-up. The downtown part of the event is something we’re looking to keep growing and developing along with the Games in the coming years.”
