Fortune favours the brave

These gutsy Queenstown Primary kids battled snow, ice and mud during a slushy cross country competition last Friday.

About 160 Year 5-8 kids took part in the run, which acted as a selection process for yesterday’s Central Otago schools cross country event at Tucker Beach.

Eighty QPS kids were up against other local primaries, plus kids from Alexandra and Omakau at the Central Otago comp.

QPS cross country organiser Mark Douglas says the kids didn’t mind running in trying conditions during last Friday’s school challenge, which consisted of a 1.8km run for Years 5 and 6, and 2.3km run for Years 7 and 8.

Instead of venturing out on to the streets, the course was set up within school grounds to make it safer.

“It’s the first time we’ve ever had anything like this before. The kids have done a lot of training but with the varying surfaces it’s pretty tough.”
