Five Arrowtown players make Otago cut

Five Arrowtown Premiers rugby players have made the Otago Country squad but no one from Wakatipu has made the cut.

Arrowtown’s reps are lock John Morrison, lock/flanker Daniel Dodds, No.8 Ben Chisholm and the Winter brothers, flanker Aidan and first-five Reece.

Country co-coach Hayden Finch, who played for Arrowtown this season, says Wakatipu second-five Tom Kelly would have been picked but is heading overseas to play.

Wakatipu No.8 Ben Blakely is the next cab off the rank, Finch notes.

Finch says the squad’s well-served with loosies and Blakely didn’t get a chance to shine when playing for Central Otago against South Otago in June because of the muddy Cromwell ground.

Wakatipu club president Damien O’Connell has no grizzles: “If you don’t perform you can’t really expect to get higher honours.”

Otago Country starts a round robin against four other regional teams in Highlanders country on August 14. They play Otago Colts in Balclutha. Wakatipu tighthead prop Brett Anderson, 20, has been selected for the Colts after making the Otago under-19s last year.

Arrowtown winger Daniel Eyles and Wakatipu loosie Toi Roberts made Otago Country’s under-20 squad.
